A FedEx driver came to the rescue of some of his packages Friday after his delivery truck caught fire in Mineola.
Nassau County fire officials said the truck blaze occurred on Old Country Road near Fourth Avenue at 9:47 a.m. Firefighters from the Garden City Fire Department responded and put out the blaze — but not before it destroyed the truck, burning through the roof and side of the delivery vehicle.
The driver, who declined to give his name, said he was driving the truck when he noticed smoke coming from the rear cab and saw that a small package was on fire.
“I had a water bottle and I used it to try to put it out,” the driver said. He said he then pulled the truck over on the westbound side of Old Country Road at the corner of Fourth Avenue.
“I got out of the truck and went to the back and started pulling out packages,” said the driver, who said he is a firefighter himself, in Elmont. Video shows another FedEx worker and a police officer helped pull the boxes piled on the ground behind the truck away from the fire.
