SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y.>> About eight years ago Jesse White became a barber. He goes by Jess Ya Barber. Now that he has a steady job, he and his friend Rasai Harper, decided to give back to the community he loves. Jess Ya Barber went to Saratoga Springs High School. He also attended Maple Avenue middle school and Lake Avenue elementary school. On Saturday they’ll cut homeless people’s hair at the patio of the Ice House from 11 a.m. until 2 p.m.
“The inspiration behind it was, I’m downtown a lot, I shake hands and hug a lot of people that own businesses. A lot of my clients own businesses around the town. I used to have people come up to me, and [ask for] some change,” said White. “I did what I could at the time but around that time I was kind of struggling myself and I couldn’t do much, but I felt like I wanted to do something more when I had a better chance to.”
White reached out to Shelters of Saratoga about hosting an event centered around providing haircuts for the homeless.
“The individuals that are going to benefit from this event, which is great, it gives them a new outlook and confidence in life even if it’s temporary,” said Rosemary Riedhammer of Shelters of Saratoga. “I think that it shows a great gesture of the community to come together and want to do this for individuals that are in need of our services, so I think it’s great for our community to show how we can come together and be supportive.”
