Schenectady police: Suspect in chase may have fired gun – New York News

Two men are in custody after they fled officers on State Street, city police said.

Witnesses told police that one of them fired a shot, according to police Sgt. Matt Dearing, but that has not been confirmed by investigators.

Police were looking for someone reported to have a weapon shortly after 4:30 p.m. Tuesday when they came upon the two men near 817/819 State St. and got out of their vehicle, Dearing said. That’s when both men turned and fled on foot, he said.

They were detained after a brief foot chase and are currently being interviewed by investigators, Dearing said. Evidence technicians processed the scene and an unidentified weapon was found — “it’s not a knife,” he said. Charges are expected.

The shot would have been fired between 4:50 p.m. and 5 p.m., Dearing said. Police are asking anyone who may have witnessed the chase to call 382-5263.

Dearing also suggested that people with cars in that area check their vehicles for potential gunshot damage, which would be helpful in the investigation.
