BATH – The Steuben County District Attorney’s Office announced a South Carolina man was convicted of engaging in sexual acts with a 17-year-old victim in the Town of Bath in 2014.
Joseph R. Watkins, 40, of Williston, S.C., was convicted Thursday after a three-day jury trial of first-degree criminal sexual act and first-degree rape, both Class B felonies, and third-degree incest, a Class E felony.
The DA’s Office said Judge William Kocher presided over the jury trial and Assistant District Attorney David Wallace presented the case for the prosecution.
The investigation was conducted by New York State Police investigators with cooperation from the Pennsylvania State Police and the Internal Revenue Service.
The DA’s Office said Wallace credited the investigators’ professionalism and the victim’s strong testimony for attaining the guilty verdict.
The DA’s Office said Watkins was a long-distance truck driver. He was remanded to Steuben County Jail after the verdict was read and will be sentenced Sept. 18.
