ELMIRA | An investigation underway at the Chemung Landfill in Elmira involves potential illegal dumping of medical waste at the site, DEC officials confirmed Thursday.
Elmira Police and the state Department of Environmental Conservation have been at the scene since at least Wednesday, according to police officials.
William Solt with the Elmira Police Department issued a statement Thursday afternoon saying the investigation was in DEC’s hands.
“The Department of Environmental Conservation is conducting an investigation at the Lake St. Milling Station,” Solt said in an email. “The Elmira Police Department has only assisted.”
The subject line on that email was “Questions about body parts.”
DEC officials said they couldn’t confirm when the situation was discovered.
They issued a short statement Thursday.
“DEC is actively investigating the potential illegal disposal of medical waste and additional information will be provided when it’s available,” DEC spokesperson Linda Vera said in an email to The Leader.
As of Thursday afternoon, approximately 10 law enforcement, DEC and landfill officials were continuing to work at the scene.
The Leader’s Stephen Borgna contributed to this story.
