Pontarelli signs with Quad City – New York News

Former Union College hockey player Michael Pontarelli will taking his webbed feet, er, skates, to the Quad City Mallards this season.

The ECHL’s Mallards officially announced the signing of Pontarelli on Thursday. The announcement came 15 days after Pontarelli tweeted that he had signed with the Mallards.

“Officially signed for next year! I’m off to Quad City to play for the Mallards in the #ECHL #NoLongerUnemployed #ThankGod,” Pontarelli tweeted on July 12.

Pontarelli will be playing for his second ECHL team. He signed with the Norfolk Admirals shortly after the Dutchmen’s season ended in the NCAA Tournament. He had two goals and three assists in five games.

Pontarelli came to Union with high expectations after collecting 52 goals and 55 assists in 53 games for the Central Canada Hockey League’s Cornwall Colts in 2012-13. He was named Player of the Year in Canadian junior “A” hockey.

During his freshman year, Pontarelli had 10 goals and 13 assists for the NCAA-champion Dutchmen, He was second on the team in power-play goals (six) and game-winning tallies (four).

However, Pontarelli never duplicated those numbers. He compiled 11 goals and 17 assists over the next three seasons.
