My wife and I have enjoyed The Gazette since we moved to the Capital District 12 years ago. It’s one of the many positive things we have learned about this area.
In your Aug. 28 edition, we read an interesting report of a town meeting with Rep. Paul Tonko and Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand about senior scams. With tongue-in-cheek, I’m dealing with a state Department of Taxation scam, not necessarily for seniors.
When I paid my school taxed in September 2016 on a newly purchase property, I was informed that, upon application, a check for our STAR exemption would be mailed to me. I immediately applied and was given a confirmation number.
Well, it’s time for my 2017 school taxes. I have not received that check yet and I have heard that the STAR exemption will not be included again.
Numerous phone calls to the Department of Taxation have not revealed the reason for this delay. I am wondering what kind of bureaucratic problem is causing it.
Feels like a scam to me.
