A young male was shot on or near the grounds of Hempstead High School Monday evening, prompting school staff to get students in after-school programs inside, authorities said.
Hempstead Village police said it is investigating a shooting on Peninsula Boulevard, but did not release other details as officers gathered information at the scene. The high school campus sits on President Street and Peninsula Boulevard.
“It happened either close to the high school or the grounds of the high school,” said Superintendent Shimon Waronker of the village schools. “We don’t know the details, whether it was our student or not.”
Waronker said he is awaiting more facts.
The first call from school officials, at about 5:45 p.m., indicated that a shot was heard, but that no one appeared to be hurt, Waronker said. Any after-school programs, such as sports practices, would be wrapping up at that point, but it was unclear how many students were outside, he said.
“Security took the precautionary measure of getting students indoors,” the superintendent said.
