Don't wait to prepare for a hurricane's fury, Suffolk officials say – New York News

In the wake of Harvey and Irma, Suffolk County officials are urging residents to to assemble emergency supply kits, map out evacuation routes and create family communications plans in the event of a hurricane.

“Don’t wait until you’re operating under stress or a couple days before,” Fire, Rescue and Emergency Services Commissioner Joseph Williams said Wednesday at a news conference in Yaphank.

Here are tips on how to prepare for extreme weather events.

1. Build an emergency supply kit.

Should include one gallon of water for each person, per day, for at least three days.

Create a supply of nonperishable foods, along with medication, a first aid kit, a flashlight, extra batteries and copies of important documents.

2. Create a communications plan.

Should include a shelter plan and evacuation routes.

Designate a friend or a relative who lives out of town to serve as a family emergency contact.
