BALLSTON SPA, N.Y. >> Only hours after its dedication, a disgruntled woman allegedly vandalized the new 9/11 Memorial adjacent Village Hall.
According to published reports, village police said Diane Granberg, 56, allegedly scrawled graffiti on a park bench and flower pot early Tuesday morning.
She was charged with vandalizing public property, a misdemeanor.
Granberg was apparently upset that her father’s name is not listed at the memorial. She wrote his name on the park bench there along with other graffiti.
But police say that although he was a firefighter, he was not involved with the park’s creation or 9/11 recovery efforts in New York.
Seven Ballston Spa firefighters went to Ground Zero shortly after the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001.
About 400 people attended an hour-long ceremony in Ballston Spa for the new 9/11 Memorial’s dedication on Monday.
The project was spearheaded by Ballston Spa Rotarian Peter Champagne and included donations of time, labor, materials and money from many local residents and businesses.
The focal point of the memorial is a pair of steel train rails that once ran beneath the World Trade Center.
Graffiti on the memorial’s park bench has been removed, reports say.
