Police: Woman vandalized bench at 9/11 memorial – New York News

BALLSTON SPA — A woman vandalized a bench at Ballston Spa’s new 9/11 memorial this week, not even 24 hours after it was initially dedicated, police said.

The woman wrote her father’s name in black marker on the bench, as well as references to him on flower pots. Her father had no connection to the events of Sept. 11, 2001, police said.

Diane Granberg, 56, of Ballston Spa, now faces one count of making graffiti on public property, a misdemeanor.

Officer Todd Ives, who arrested Granberg, said Granberg referenced her late father in explaining her actions.

“She went to the memorial and said that she was extremely sad that her father’s name wasn’t put on the memorial,” Ives said.

The officer didn’t have any further explanation on why she chose the memorial, a memorial meant to honor the nearly 3,000 victims of 9/11.

The monument is next to Village Hall on Front Street and features the last two transit rails salvaged from Ground Zero after the terrorist attacks.

The 13-foot, 650-pound rails are the centerpieces of a memorial. They lie parallel on steel pedestals, elevated just above a pentagon-shaped concrete border.

The village dedicated the memorial Monday evening, the 16th anniversary of the attacks.

The graffiti did not touch the other parts of the memorial.

“Somebody having the audacity to do that, it just made a lot of people extremely upset,” Ives said of the graffiti, “and I can understand clearly why.”

Granberg was issued an appearance ticket and is due back in court later this month.
