Saratoga Springs narrows down schools boss finalists – New York News

SARATOGA SPRINGS — The Saratoga Springs school district is narrowing down finalists for its open superintendent position, setting up public presentations by candidates later this month.


The finalists will be asked to address the broader Saratoga Springs community, describing how they would interact with parents, staff, students and community members in their first year as superintendent.

James Dexter, who as distirct superintendent of the Washington-Saratoga-Warren-Hamilton-Essex BOCES is helping organize the search, said each candidate will make an hour-long presentation on separate nights. He said the district is likely to choose two or three finalists to give presentations.

They will be announced Sept. 25, according to the district. 

The community presentations are scheduled for Sept. 26 and 27 and, if needed, Oct. 3. They will be held at the high school teaching auditorium, room H102, from 5 to 6 p.m. 

Dexter said the presentations will give board members a chance to see how the candidates do in a public-speaking role and how they engage with residents. The presentations are an optional part of the search process that not all districts pursue, he said. 

“The advantage is, the board really gets a sense of how they present, what they would do in their first year, and they get a sense of how they interact with the community,” Dexter said. 

A final decision on the appointment could be made as early as next month, Dexter said, as the district moves to transition to a new leader after the holidays.
