Second breast-feeding Baby Cafe opens in Wyandanch – New York News

Long Island’s second Baby Cafe for pregnant or breast-feeding women is opening from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Sept. 16 in Wyandanch.

Baby Cafe offers free drop-in sessions for information, support and camaraderie. The Wyandanch meetings will take place twice a month on select Saturdays. A trained breast-feeding counselor will be at every session. At the first session, lunch will be included. Women can bring babies, partners and other children.

“There’s a need for breast-feeding support in the Wyandanch area. This was an easy opportunity for us to be able to use the space for the community,” says Kristen Johnson, director of community access programs for Community Nazarene Church.

Baby Cafe is a nationwide network of breast-feeding support groups launched in 2011 meant to recreate the village where mothers always supported mothers, according to Lucia Jenkins of Massachusetts, founder of Baby Cafe USA, a nonprofit that now has 85 cafes in 24 states. Long Island’s first Baby Cafe opened in August at Southside Hospital in Bay Shore.

The Wyandanch meetings will take place on the lower level of the church at 58 Cumberbach St. For more information and to R.S.V.P., visit…
